About

About

Ash uses experimental and eastern classical forms of vocal music practice to explore sound. His form connects and recreates improvisation, sound art and Hindustani classical. Major threads that run though his work are deep listening, transcendental states, sound therapy and exploratory processes. He creates for studio recording, installations and live performance. As an interdisciplinary artist, he creates work to explore the inner and outer states of being, finding ties between art therapy, intuitive process and cross discipline ventures.

Utilizing his skills within sound composition, moving image, and installation, he creates hybrids forms that take audiences to multi sensory ambient realms. His work has found its place within the MONA FOMA festival, the Eye Am Hair salon, M-Pavillon’s Parkade, Melbourne Fringe festival and at independently produced events.

Browse the documentation below for an introduction to his work.

Hailing from Melbourne, I currently live in Hobart as a composer-artist and am a proud new parent. I’ve been pursuing a varied creative career and dedicated arts-composition practice since 2011. My journey has led me on a path that has so far been predominantly on the fringes and as a solo artist, which has helped refine a unique interdisciplinary language and practice.
My formal education has led to partially completing bachelor degrees within fine arts (sound and spatial practice), music production and film. I’ve had significant experiences that have affected my outlook by traveling to art and music festivals across the globe, studying Hindustani classical music in India, and directing independent interdisciplinary art events.
My work is predominantly created within sound, installation art and performance. On the surface level, this has eventuated into exploring the process of these mediums to create hybrid works and immersive experiences. Reoccuring themes and concepts that have come through various projects have been
  • redefining space, time and concert setting through visual augmentation
  • experimentation with audience spaces, participation and performer experience
  • cross-discipline bridges that tie well being, art and hair dressing
  • processes that encourages creative collaborators to think outside of their disciplines
I have keen interest in varying cultural perspectives of the transcendental and exploration within art and music. Within all the mediums I work with, I try to align my practice with transcendental and intuitive exploration at heart. For audiences, I thoroughly enjoy exploring how the transcendent experiences can be composed and how traditional performance settings can be transformed.
I have a fairly wide view of sound, music and its composition. My interest in composing in multiple mediums, tertiary education with sound and spatial practice and interest in process music over music theory has skewed me in this direction. Regardless of my fringe perspectives, I have an equal love for traditional forms of music and its composition. I’m predominantly self taught as a composer-vocalist-producer, have small bouts of training vocal and tabla within Hindustani classical in India, and developed a practice of intuitive exploration in my process of composition-rehearsal-conception. This has collated into the form of the album, conceptual performances that sit within the process music movement, and most recently collaborating with professionally trained musicians.
